Based on a series of studies which report that Social Support “buffers” the impact of Life Stress on illness (Cohen & Wills, 1985) and psychological reactions (Raffaelli , et al. 2013), the present study was conducted to test the hypothesis that Social Support would buffer, that is moderate (Baron & Kenny, 1986), the relationship between Life Stress and Depression. The sample consisted of 152 adults, randomly selected from a large suburban university in the Northeast. Males (n=76) and females (n=76) were equally represented in the sample. Study participants completed a 75-item questionnaire designed to measure recent (within the past six months) Life Stress, Social Support, and Psychological Depression.
