Your second paper will be about the article “The Ways of Meeting Oppression” in Models for Writers. If you have the latest edition of the book, it should start on page 467.
For students in English 98, they will also read “Shame” in Models for Writers. If you have the latest edition of the book, it should start on page 163.
In “The Ways of Meeting Oppression”, the author is implying some things in the article. In your paper, tell your audience what it is that the author is implying in your own words. Do you agree with the author or disagree with him? Why do you agree or disagree with the author? Make sure you use the PIE format to justify the opinion you take in your writing. It does not matter so much what opinion you take, but it does matter how well you validate your opinion. You should have good logic to back up your opinion combined with the PIE format to illustrate your points in your logic.
For 98 students, answer the following question, “What is the message the author is trying to give by writing his story, ‘Shame’?” How does this story relate to writings of Martin Luther King? For 98 students, you are doing a comparison between what was implied in the first article with what was implied in the second article. Then after this, you form your own opinion just like students in 97 do. After discussing both articles, you need to convince the reader about your opinion by providing examples from both articles.
This paper should be typed in MLA format. 97 students should have at least one-and-a-half pages, and 98 students should have at least three pages. Remember these page numbers are minimums. You can have more pages if it makes your paper more complete and convincing.
