Discussion Assignment:
Previous chapters in the textbook discussed the use of z-scores for hypothesis testing and
standardized distribution. This week, chapter 9 introduces the t statistic as an alternative
to z. Prior to answering the questions below, read chapter 9 and view the following Khan
Academy video on the comparison of z-statistics and t statistics.

1. In your own words, describe how t statistic and z statistic are similar and how they are
different.
2. The T-score on your bone density report shows how much your bone mass differs from the
bone mass of an average health 30-year-old adult. One standard deviation is equal to a 1012% difference in bone mass. Osteoporosis is defined as a T-score that is 25% lower than
the average 30-year-old, or a T-score lower than -2.5.
A Z-score compares your bone density to the average bone density of people your own age and
gender.
•
Why should a post-menopausal woman always request a T-score rather than just a Z-score?
Please explain your reasoning.
-Be sure to appropriately cite any sources you use to support your responses with standard APA citations.
