Haley Discussion:
After reading both articles, I would personally prefer to work for Zuckerberg. The working cultures and leadership described within these two articles are like night and day. The Amazon working environment is described as, “a deliberately adversarial culture” where employees are name-called, frequently contacted outside business hours, and resorted to “many nights of drinking with roommates” to cope (Upadhyaya, 2013). Contrarily, the working culture of Facebook and Instagram emphasizes, “Getting the teams to think like collaborators and not competitors.” (Carr, 2013). While the Amazon employees shared that the harsh working environment, adversarial, and data-driven nature spurred results that were successful for Amazon’s bottom line, I personally think that kind of thinking can be dangerous for employees. In a working culture where the ends justified the means, the mistreatment of employees seemed to be glorified, simply because Amazon continued to be profitable (Priesemuth, 2020). I would argue that Amazon continues to be profitable in spite of its adversarial work environment, not because of it; afterall, evidence suggests that positive working cultures demonstrate lower employee absenteeism, decreased turnover rates, improved physical/mental health of workers, and higher commitments to organizational success (Craig, 2017). Zuckerburg’s balance of leadership and worker autonomy displays that he trusts employees; similarly, the fostering of community between Facebook and Instagram demonstrates a team environment that I would personally be more successful/happy in.

Leanne Discussion:
I do believe when it comes to being a leader and an effective communicator, the leader has to be in tune and in harmony with its staff. This starts at the interview process with making sure they are a good fit for the culture and what the company can do for them and vice versa. By making employees feel like part of the organization and not just here to collect a paycheck, stamina and morale can be increased and achieving milestones and goals can sometimes be done at a smoother pace. I believe it is important for the leader to know the staff and treat them just as well as stakeholders and consumers, while maintaining a healthy balance of manager and employee.
The management style of Bezos seems to be focused around data being the ultimate clue to the right answer and working employees with machines and data in mind. Because it is such a big company, quick and right answers were what counted, and it seems like mental stress and over working seems to be a theme. Honestly, some people like this mentally. I personally like a blend of Bezos and Zuckerberg. Some people are here to work, learn lessons, and be worked to the bone. This culture works for some, but I do think it would be challenging me to have such a casual relationship with co-workers after business hours. I keep my work and personal life very separate because it has gotten me into trouble a few times, so I am careful about what I say and do sometimes. I also leave my work at work. Being an hourly employee to me means once I am done, I am done. Taking work home, working late, and drinking and expressing themselves with employees could work for some and I honestly think it is important to work in this kind of culture in order to grow, but to me the instilment of fear from my boss would be too much for me. Ultimately, the purpose of this work was important and worthwhile and the employees were not being asked to do projects or find solutions on tasks that did not matter. Ultimately it is mind over matter with this and if you are able to work in a culture that is fast paced and your boss is considered an authority based figure then some people are able to thrive in that kind of culture.
Zuckerberg’s approach is more hands off, fluid, and organic. He is big on overlapping, showed with the case of Facebook and Instagram, and although both companies continue to be profitable, Zuckerberg looks at blending communities and minds together to focus on the better picture. He is working with all levels of employees and stakeholders to really get to the root of the solution and really see the product and the service from the customer point of view. Zuckerberg states that we are all the same company and have many of the same common goals and mindset. This form of thinking allows employees to feel comfortable knowing that they are all in this together and are working together to form a common goal. It is a very modern way of managing where the leader is on the floor working as a close-knit group to a variety of different employees. If I were to work for either of these bosses, I would probably choose Zuckerberg. I would consider myself independent and can be creative with whatever is thrown at me. I work best when I am left alone and do not need to be micromanaged. Because Zuckerberg is more hands on, it is easier for him to read the emotional intelligence of his staff based off what they need. Sometimes we all need a bit of Bezo’s management in our life during the day and a healthy dose of both would be ideal for me. Based on modern management and culture, Zuckerberg’s management theory fits more in line with my learning style and the future of the business industry.
