Fernandez (2018) and Montgomery and Byrne (2014) are the two scholarly sources that support
one’s mock study as defined by the research question: Is there a correlation between the
sex/gender and insurance status of homeless individuals and their emergency department
encounters at Adventist Health White Memorial hospital in Los Angeles, California, between
2019-2020?
The purpose of Fernandez’s (2018) study was to examine the utilization of emergency
department services by homeless adults in Pomona, California achieved through quantitative
research methods. The results revealed that many homeless adults frequent the emergency
department for mental health reasons and those homeless adults with physical ailments
required longer lengths of stay and extensive discharge planning. As Fernandez (2018) stated,
there are differences in health issues between men and women, but there are few studies that
explore the differences between homeless men and women in the context of emergency
department use. And this is the main reason Fernandez’s research is significant. This study is
relevant to one’s mock study as it examines gender health issues and insurance factors within
the context of emergency department utilization among homeless individuals. One learned that
Medicaid expansions under the Affordable Care Act were correlated with improved access to
healthcare for homeless individuals (Fernandez 2018). Thus, supporting part of one’s
hypothesis that homeless individuals having health insurance increases emergency department
use. Also, this study is beneficial to individuals, communities, and health professionals/scholars
to better understand the healthcare experiences of homeless individuals (Fernandez 2018).
The purpose of Montgomery and Byrne’s (2014) study was to provide a gender-based
comparison of Veterans’ utilization of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health and
behavioral health services following the onset of a homeless episode and assess the
relationship between service utilization and Veterans’ entry into the homeless system. The
results showed that men used more substance abuse outpatient treatment and emergency
services whereas women used more emergency medical treatment services. This study was
relevant to one’s mock study as it also compares gender-based utilization of emergency
services of homeless men and women. The analysis process in this study was two phases:
gender-based comparisons of services using t-tests and logistic regression to model the
likelihood of using each service type and negative binomial regression to model the volume
(i.e., number of ED visits) of each type of service use as a function of gender (Montgomery &
Byrne 2014). The t-tests compare the means of two groups and regression models describe the
relationship between variables by fitting a line (straight or curved) to the observed data. This
helped one gain a better understanding of how the t-test and regression models are used in
real research studies to analyze quantitative outcome variables.
