Note: You need the Analysis ToolPak installed in Excel. This is a free add-on and can be found by
clicking on Tools, then Excel Add-Ins and check the Analysis ToolPak box.
Frequency Tables:
The easiest way to create a frequency table in Excel is to make a pivot table. To do this, highlight the
column you want to make into a frequency table, then select Insert > Pivot Table.
When the pivot table fields pop up, check the variable name then drag the variables name to Rows.
The frequency table will then appear.
Note: If you are using an ordinal or interval variable, you will need to change the Sum to Count. Do this by
selecting Values field > Values Field Settings > Count.

For example, here we are looking at years of schooling and household income, so we need to change
years of schooling to count, and household income to average by clicking on the little i.
Histogram:
To create a histogram in Excel, follow the steps above but instead of selecting Pivot Table, you should
select Pivot Chart and complete the steps above.
Note: Be sure to format your tables and charts according to APA guidelines and copy and paste your
tables into a Word doc prior to submission.
