My chosen subject was about terrorists. People’s ideas about terrorism have changed over time due to historical events, media, and beliefs. The 9/11 attacks in 2001 had a major impact on how people view terrorism, leading to increased security and fear. Before that, some groups in the early 1900s used violence to fight against governments they thought were unfair.
Different people and groups have been labeled as terrorists throughout history. In recent years, groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS have carried out violent attacks. Governments, world leaders, and the media shape how people understand terrorism, with some seeing it as violence and others as a fight for freedom.
After 9/11, security became stricter, especially at airports, and the U.S. government increased surveillance. Society also changed, as some people unfairly treated certain religious and ethnic groups, leading to discrimination and immigration policy changes.
News and social media play a big role in how people view terrorism. The way attacks are reported can create stereotypes, causing people to judge others unfairly based on looks, religion, or background.
Understanding this topic helps us see how history, media, and politics shape our views. Malcolm X once said, “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent.” This reminds us to think critically and not let fear or misinformation influence how we see others.

For my project, I chose the topic Deconstructing Anti-Immigrant Narratives. I’m looking at how fear, language, and laws have shaped the way immigrants are viewed in the U.S. over time. There are two main narratives tied to this topic. One is the dominant one that paints immigrants as threats, especially during times of national stress. The other comes from immigrants themselves, sharing real stories of struggle, resilience, and resistance. These events stretch from the late 1700s, like the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, to present-day movements like Black Lives Matter and debates around border control. Lawmakers, immigrant communities, and advocacy groups have all played a role in shaping these narratives. This topic matters because these ideas still affect how people view immigration today. It shows how fear can be used to divide people, but also how immigrants have always pushed back and fought for inclusion and justice.

My name is Hayley Eager, and I am from Kalamazoo, Michigan. To me, success is to live a happy life with limited to no financial restraints. I don’t measure success just financially but also how I feel mentally. These apply to both personal and professional success. American Express is a company I consider successful. According to (Express, 2025), at the end of 2023, their Net Income was $8,374 million, and it had a 21% increase for the end of 2024 at $10,129 million. According to (Coleman, 2024) American Express has been targeting Millenial and Gen Z customers, and they made up 60% of new card acquisitions for the last quarter. They attribute this growth to more merchants accepting American Express. Another metric that can be used to track American Express’s success is its employee satisfaction ratings. According to (Work, 2024) 94% of their employees say its a great place to work compared to 57% of employees at typical US-based companies. This ranking is because they focus on employee well-being, a culture of inclusivity, and ample opportunities for growth and recognition. I consider this as a way to measure success because it lowers turnover rates and promotes them as a good company to work for.
