EXECUTIVE SUMMARY*
Required elements: Problem statement, factors and units of measurement, method for examining
data, purpose/relevance of the data examination, and nature of the findings.

Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) compromise patient safety, lower patient satisfaction, and
may adversely affect provider quality ratings and provider reimbursement (source, year). This
study will examine the relative weight of HAI contributing factors a, b and c via percentage

review may serve as insights for comparative analysis benchmarking, quality improvement, and
future reduction of HAIs.
Tip: Executive Summary – One page maximum, double spaced. Include the problem statement,
rationale/purpose/value for the analysis, statement of the method/approach (cost benefit
analysis? Compliance audit? Other?). Also include the key factors or performance indicators
that directly relate to the problem, how each factor is measured, and the goal for the data
analysis (e.g. to discover new insights into problem x for quality improvement purposes/other).
The executive summary needs to clearly state how the project adds value to the organization.
Note that the problem statement must be presented in this form: Condition X may result in
adverse consequence(s) Y.
