In the United States, systemic racism can keep people of racial and ethnic minorities from being in optimal health. People of color are less likely to have health insurance through their jobs or other ways of accessing it. According to the U.S. Census, “the U.S. uninsured rate in 2021 across race and Hispanic origin groups ranged from 5.7% for White, non-Hispanic people to 18.8% for those identifying as American Indian and Alaska Native, non-Hispanic. Hispanic or Latino people had among the highest uninsured rate in the nation at 17.7%” (2022). Even if people of color have health insurance, implicit bias and racism in the healthcare field can overlook people of color’s health problems, not take their pain seriously, or not help them navigate the healthcare system. Other epidemiological causes of worse health outcomes for people of color include access to healthy food and water, proximity to violence, access to mental health resources, and access to employment and financial security (Carratala & Maxwell, 2020).
My question is, how can we ensure all members of society are included in healthcare services including mental and physical healthcare as well as general wellness? How can we ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and that patients are taken seriously? How do we get resources in place so that people are able to navigate the system and advocate for themselves?
