Critical Path Method
Your organization has been working on decreasing the time it takes for patients to flow through the ED when
they require laboratory and radiology services, and then end up having to be admitted. They are considering
changes to the location of the transport personnel. In addition, there is a process that a different quality
improvement team has been working on that is requesting your analytic help.
You will be submitting an Excel file with flow times for these two areas answered.
Point allocations for the problems are:
1. ED: 10 points
2. Question 2: 40 points
The grading is based on completing the analytics correctly. Even if you arrive at the correct answers, full credit
will not be given if you hardwired in numbers into your formulas, rather than inserting the appropriate cell
references.

Question 1: ED Flow
The ED quality improvement team has been discussing assigning a team of transport personnel dedicated to
the ED. They contend that this would decrease the time it takes to transport patients to and from radiology
from the ED department from 15 minutes down to 5. They have asked you to provide them with an estimate
of how the theoretical flow time would improve. To answer this question, do the following:
1. Open the Excel file in which you completed the CPM for the example in Module 4. Then open the
Excel Module 4 Excel file. The steps below will create a copy of your completed CPM worksheet and
move it to your Module 4 homework Excel file. Both files must be open for these steps to work.
a. In the CPM file, right click on the worksheet name, then choose Move or Copy. When the
textbox appears, click in the box at the bottom to the left of the text that says Create a copy.
b. Next, click on the down arrow below the text at the top that says To book, and choose the
file option that is the name of the Excel Module 4 homework. Then click OK.
c. If you have completed these steps correctly, you should now have a copy of the CPM
worksheet in your Excel homework file.
2. Make the changes in the appropriate activities in Activity Time column. If you have set your
worksheet model up correctly, everything else should automatically update. Insert a textbox
somewhere in the worksheet to write up a short conclusion about the impact of this transport
change to theoretical flow time, and the flow times of any other paths in this process.

A second quality improvement team is working on the flow time for the top secret project shown in question
13.6 on page 466 of the Ozcan text. They want you to use the CPM for the analysis. Use the table provided in the
Question 2 worksheet to do this. Steps to do this are:
1. For part (a), you can either draw the activity on node diagram by hand and then take a picture of it
to include in your excel file, or you can create one similar to what was shown in the Module 2 video
in the top rows of the worksheet.
2. For parts (b) and (c), type your answer in the textbox included on the worksheet as indicated.
3. For part (d), complete the table on the Question 2 worksheet. Type the appropriate activity time
into the Activity Time column. Type the appropriate letter(s) A through J into the predecessor and
successor columns, and then calculate the EST, EFT, LFT, LST, and slack time for each activity. When
doing your calculations, remember to click on cells and use the MIN and MAX functions where
needed. Do NOT hardwire the numbers into the calculated columns.
