1860’s (right before and after civil war)- Dogs and cats become more prominent in cities
1866 – Henry Bergh founded the ASPCA
1869 – Women’s PSPCA founded in Bensalem, PA
1877 – American Humane Society Founded in Cleveland, OH
Post WW2 (1950’s-60’s) – Formation of the middle class and the suburbs (yards) – pet ownership increases
1954 – HSUS is founded
1970 – Effective sterilization and trend of spay and neuter
1984 – BFAS Founded
1989 – Rich Avanzino does not renew Animal Control contract with the city of SF and focused on lifesaving instead
1989 – Ed Duvin publishes “In the Name of Mercy”
1990’s – No kill ethos is spread through BF magazine
2001 – Nathan Winograd and Thompkins County, NY – first No-Kill community in the country
2016 – BFAS plants stake in the ground to take the country to no-kill by 2025
2025 – The United States is NO-KILL!
