Data Review Project Overview
A Bridge from Academic Work to Your Health Care
Workplace
The goal of this course is to help you create a bridge from your academic work into the health
care workplace and also to advance your career progression. The capstone experience
provides an opportunity to establish new contacts for networking, enhance your visibility and
access within a desirable health care organization, demonstrate leadership competencies,
conduct a data review project, and provide a solution to a health care problem.
If you are already working in health care, the capstone project provides an opportunity to
expand your skill sets, assume a different role, transition into a new department, or change
sectors within the industry. The networking and visibility that result from a capstone experience
can propel your career to the next level.
It is Capella’s goal to assist you in refining your career development path with measurable
action steps and provide a platform from which you can launch your academic skills into the
workplace.
Critical Success Factors
Critical success factors for the capstone experience are:
•
A thorough understanding of how you will be evaluated in the capstone course.
•
Working knowledge of the NCHL Health Leadership Competency Model.
•
Organized, clear, timely, and proactive communication.
•
Accurate self-assessment of your current competencies relative to the data review
project you propose. (The capstone project is an examination of existing data sets.)
•
A reasonable expectation that the targeted health care organization would benefit from a
data analysis. This organization should be a current or prospective employer, an
organization with which you have a preexisting business relationship, or one at which
you volunteer as a non-salaried staff.
Capstone Project Design Process
An important part of this process is to reflect upon your relevant experience in human services
and health care administration that is relative to your proposed project. You have to determine if
your proposed project is realistic when based on the NCHL competencies?
For example, if you plan to interface with an acute care facility, are you aware of legal,
regulatory, procedural, and cultural expectations, such as vision, mission, strategic direction,
human resources and legal considerations, HIPAA regulations that directly relate to acute care,
organizational design, etiquette for executive team conferences, or health and safety
requirements? If you have no previous health care experience, you might want to carefully
construct a project experience that would be best suited to an early careerist in health care.
1
An optimal capstone project:
•
Is appropriate given your background and career phase.
•
Incorporates your professional development goals.
•
Adds value to your client or sponsor organization.
General Structure of a Data Review Process
The process will differ based on the topic, but follow the following steps as a part of the general
process of a data review:
•
Review the literature to determine the relevance of the topic.
•
Ensure that ample literature exists on the topic.
•
Identify up to three factors or aspects of the problem which are covered in the literature.
•
Articulate the relevant performance indicators and associated units of measure.
•
Compile raw data.
•
Create a structure for the visual display of data, for example, a bar graph, pie chart,
process map with variance, trend line, and histogram. Construct descriptive titles that
include the factor, indicator, and measure.
•
Summarize the data and place it in the visual display structures.
•
Add a short summary of important findings.
•
Make two evidence-based recommendations.
•
Add a conclusion section.
•
Add an APA-formatted reference list.
Capstone Project
Acceptable projects focus on a current and relevant health care issue or problem. It also
involves the review of the existing data sets.
The data are either in the public domain or already exist within a health care organization. You
will identify what type of data will be needed for the examination of the proposed issue or topic
and will obtain advanced written permission from the health care organization to review the
data. The project proposal template used in this course includes a confidentiality statement.
Examples of Capstone Projects
Examples of past projects involving the analysis of problems include:
•
Compliance with a patient safety goal or benchmark (comparison).
•
Compliance with new regulatory requirements for reimbursement under the Affordable
Care Act of 2010.
•
Analysis of outcomes for a new wellness service line.
•
Adherence to national standards for various organizational procedures.
2
•
Analysis of patient survey data following implementation of a new service line.
•
A cost-benefit analysis associated with the purchase of a new capital equipment.
•
Risk management analysis.
Assessment Flow
This is a course where you identify a real-world health care problem, identifying factors and key
indicators that directly relate to a health care issue, examine existing data sets, and make
recommendations.
The flow of the assessments is as follows:
1. Project Topic Selection. Select your topic and perform an initial survey of scholarly
articles related to the issue.
2. Data Review Project Proposal. Create your first draft of a proposal that will be
presented to an appropriate health care professional for approval. It will be used to
perform the data review for their organization.
3. Client Meeting and Project Approval. Meet with the health care professional you have
identified to present your project proposal, refine your project based on client feedback,
and obtain approval to go ahead with the project.
4. Data Review Project Report and Presentation. Submit your project report. The format
is similar to your project proposal from Assessment 2, but with revisions. Add new
information as you complete this assessment.
5. Health Care Leadership Self-Assessment. You will use NCHL competency
terminology to provide substantive yet concise examples of your how your skills in
leadership have developed over the course of your professional and academic career.
You will assess your skill levels when you began your studies at Capella and the time
you took your lessons while at Capella. Finally, you will look to your future to target
specific skills and competencies you want to enhance and develop beyond your Capella
experience.
