Excel Group Project – Fall 2022
FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is upon us! The World Cup is the most prestigious football
tournament in the world. This international competition has been organized every four years since
1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of World War II.
Through this Excel assignment, you will explore the history of the World Cup. The data has been
collected from FIFA’s website.1 We chose a selection of indicators in the accompanying Excel file
that you would analyze to answer some interesting questions about the World Cup in general, as
well as the performance of the participating teams.
Part I: General World Cup Statistics (3.5 points)
The objective of this part is to produce some interesting statistics regarding the history of the World
Cup. Use Excel and the provided dataset to answer the following questions:
1. What is the total number of goals scored in all World Cups combined? (0.25 point)
2. What is the average number of goals per game in all World Cups combined? (0.25 point)
3. Use the SUMIF function to calculate the total number of goals scored in each World Cup
from 1930 to 2018. Which World Cup had the highest total number of goals? (0.5 point)
4. In all World Cup games played, what is the proportion of games that end up in a draw?
(0.5 point)
5. Create a new column that computes for each row the goals difference (Goals For minus
Goals Against). Plot the histogram of goals differences. What can you say about the shape
of the distribution of this variable? (0.5 point)
6. Calculate the coefficient of variation of goals scored (Goals For) and goals received (Goals
Against). Which variable is more dispersed? (0.5 point)

7. We are interested in whether the teams that tend to score the most tend also to receive more
goals or not. To answer this question, draw a scatter diagram of goals scored (Goals For)
and goals received (Goals Against). Compute their coefficient of correlation. What can you
say about the relationship between these two variables? (0.5 point)
8. We are interested in comparing the distributions of goals scored (Goals For) and goals
received (Goals Against). Compute the 5-number summary of each of these two variables.
What can you say about their distributions? (0.5 point)
Part II: Teams Performance (1.5 points)
In this part, we are interested in the performance of the different national teams measured over all
their participations in the World Cup.
You are asked to create a list of (unique) teams that participated in all World Cups using Excel.
To do that, first, copy the column Teams into an empty sheet. Select the newly copied column and
click on Data, then Remove Duplicates. You should have now a list of 85 unique teams.2 Use this
list to answer the following questions:
1. Use the COUNTIF function to count the number of participations in the World Cup for each
team. What are the top 5 teams with the highest number of World Cup participations? (0.5
point)
2. Use the SUMIF function to count the number of goals each team scored in all its participations
in the World Cup. What are the top 5 teams with the highest number of goals scored? (0.5
point)
3. We are interested in the performance of teams as measured by their win ratio (ratio of games
won to games played). What are the top 5 teams with the highest win ratio in the history of the
World Cup? (0.5 point)
2
There is an issue of whether Germany, West Germany and East Germany should count as a single country. We leave
them separated in this analysis.
