Research Topic
Media plays a substantial role in how individuals receive information.
The information that is being shared can be influence by the author in multiple ways, thus creating biases. Biases in the media are practiced through reporting events and stories and how they are covered. Research regarding media bias explores the impact of psychological constructs, which are best understood through a qualitative approach. Research topic: A qualitative approach will allow for more information to be collected and provide an opportunity for additional insight regarding individual(s) and group(s) experiences. The collected data will serve a purpose to lead action for increasing awareness for underrepresented populations as well as a reduction in negative stigmas in the community (Murrar, 2019). These experiences are extracted by the researcher through a choice of a methodological approach and then through methods of interviews, surveys, and observations.
Topic Background
This research proposal will seek to examine the responses and changes of media biases with authors/journals and their subjective experiences on producing information. There is minimal research that reflects the individual process of the experience of those journalists/authors who work in media platforms. The current research regarding media bias focuses on how information is portrayed in media such as politics (Pietrantonio & Llamas, 2020) and populations that experience prejudice (Bowman & West, 2018) (Bilali & Staub, 2017). For a better attempt in understanding the perspectives of those who produce the information being shared in the media. There have been minimal studies that report the benefits of group and individual perspectives journalists/authors who work in producing media.
Topic Rationale
The rationale for investigating media bias is to understand how media impacts the psychological constructs of individuals who are producing information for the viewing public on a media platform. The topic is appropriate for a qualitative approach by obtaining individual and group responses on the experience of working in the media. The topic will report on journalists/authors and their perspectives on selecting events or subjects with media biases.
A Research Question for Each of the Five Methodological Approaches
A Research Question for Each of the Five Methodological Approaches
Below are each of the five methodological approaches with a research question and explanation:
Ethnography- How do journalists/authors conceptualize media biases to shape
social norms? The methodological approach of ethnography focuses explicitly on exploring cultures and their point of view on any subject. For this research question example, the population is authors and journalists and questioning their processes to conclude social norms as the media present it?
Case study- What strategies are being used by media stations to navigate the
exposure related to inclusive behaviors suggested as prejudice concepts? The methodological approach of a case study investigates the personal and specific concepts of an individual or group.
Grounded Theory – What are the attitudes of journalists/authors from an interracial marriage have towards the daily media that nurture prejudice? The grounded theory’s methodological approach is developing a new theory with the data collected, primarily using inductive reasoning.
Phenomenology- What role do the journalist’s stereotypes play in presenting his or her media story? The methodological approach of phenomenology focuses on the conscious experience of an individual or group of individuals.
Generic qualitative inquiry- As a new first-year female journalist, what are
your perceptions of reducing media biases? The methodological approach of general qualitative inquiry focuses on descriptions of the experience and understanding of a specific process or perspective.
Each of the five methodological approaches has characteristics that align with its associated research question provides an inquire of data collection based on what is being requested through each methodological approach, each question provides insight in multiple directions on how to obtain data that would best fit the research topic.
This study explores with media journalists/authors their perceptions of the cognitive process to select information with a means to provide to the public. The study should refine/add too many areas of psychology as well as advance scientific knowledge.
