Homework #7: Chapters 6.1-6.2, 6.4, Due 11/7/22 by Midnight PTQuestion 1:
Suppose we wanted to test the idea that a control group of cancer patients using an older treatment
would report different mean pain ratings than an experimental group receiving special massage
treatments. Use the following information:
Control Group:
Ȳ1 = 78.1,
n1 = 25,
σ21 = 51.7
Experimental Group:
Ȳ2 = 74.1,
n2 = 25,
σ22 = 51.7
a. Assuming all assumptions are satisfied, construct the appropriate 90% confidence interval to
estimate the mean difference in pain ratings between the control and experimental groups.
b. Interpret your confidence interval from part (a).
Question 2:
Using the information from Question 1, perform the 5-step process of the appropriate hypothesis test
to determine if we have sufficient evidence to show that the experimental treatment has lower pain
ratings on average than that of the old treatment (use α = 0.10).
Question 3:
Assuming the populations are normal and have roughly equal variances, perform the 5-step process of
the appropriate hypothesis test to determine whether there is a significant difference in the mean noise
levels between the two types of jets (use α = 0.05).
Question 4:
All persons running for public office must report the amounts of money spent during their campaigns.
Political scientists have contended that female candidates generally find it difficult to raise money and
therefore spend less in their campaigns than do male candidates. Suppose the accompanying data
represent the campaign expenditures of a randomly selected group of 20 male and 20 female
candidates for the state legislature. The following statistics were calculated from these two samples:
Female:
Ȳ1 = 245.3,
n1 = 20,
s1 = 51.95
Male:
Ȳ2 = 351.0,
n2 = 20,
s2 = 61.92
Assuming the populations are normal and have roughly equal variances, do the following:
a. Estimate the size of the difference in the mean campaign expenditures between female and
male candidates using a 99% confidence interval.
b. Is there a significant difference at the 0.01 level in the mean campaign expenditures between
female and male candidates (hint: use your confidence interval from part a)?
Question 5:
(Note: Use α = 0.05 for Part (a) and perform the 5-step process of the appropriate test.
Part (b) is asking for a 95% confidence interval.)
