peer 1 How would you describe Hypothesis Testing to a friend outside of this statistics class?
Well it would depend on who outside of statistics I would be explaining it to but for instance if I were speaking to lets say a family member like my cousin and for response purposes her name will be Ana. I would describe hypothesis testing by putting a topic that she interested in like coffee or even what she is studying in school at the moment. So I would explain the hypothesis on who would drink more coffee a person addicted or a person that is not for better lack of words. So to test my hypothesis which lets say it would be the person addicted to coffee is the person who would drink more coffee and I would show the results by testing in a survey or by doing a live testing where you choose a person who is a addicted and who is not and see who drinks more. One way to show this type of testing is called the null hypothesis which aims to nullify the alternative hypothesis by implying that there exists no relation between two variables in statistics. It states that the effect of one variable on the other is solely due to chance and no empirical cause lies behind it. So the statistical test does determine a low probability that the difference is due to chance, then the original hypothesis is supported. If repeated experiments continue to support the hypothesis then we expand to other populations and settings to see if the hypothesis can be generalized. By explaining this I would hope she would understand what hypothesis testing is.

We use Hypothesis testing when we want to solve things like probability and parameter of an outcome, by doing so you are also figuring out the significance level of that probability. You will be drawing a conclusion of what the parameter or significance level is. In statistics in order to find that correct probability we must break it down into components such as, the Mean, Standard Deviation and Variance. The uses of statistics may be more complex than your normal math of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, but it is set up to leave no room for errors in obtaining that hypothesis. In statistics questions contain trick words like for example, the word sum which means to add the given numbers. Part of statistics and testing the hypothesis is knowing that your formulas and your steps are crucial to success. My advice on mastering statistics is to pay attention to formula’s, specific symbolic meanings and to thoroughly read each question given.
