condition. For example, if a doctor was looking at the risks for uterine cancer
for women over the age of 50 a PICOT would be: Are women who have no
children at decreased risk of uterine cancer compared with women without
children who are over the age of 50. This looks a specific disease and risk
factors for the disease.
Nursing practice problem is an issue that a nurse can lead in correcting without
doctors’ orders. Nurses strive to be patients advocate and provide the best
possible care to patients by following evidence-based practice guidelines. An
example of a nursing practice problem would be that on an orthopedic floor
there is an increase of falls with patients following knee surgery because of not
wearing slipper socks. A PICOT for this would be: for post knee arthroplasty
patients does the use of slipper socks reduce the risk of falls compared to
regular non-slip socks.
Evidence based care which is used day in and out to provide patients with the
best possible care all starts from the intuition or insight of a nurse who has
seen changes that need to be made to improve care. It is important that the
PICOT be based on a nursing practice problem so that it stays within the
nursing scope of practice to solve. Unlike medical problems which seek find
and treat a disease nursing problem need to lead to safe, quality care that is
paramount to advancing the nursing profession.
