– Organization of the Human Body week 1
Each of the following labs is designed with the following format:
1) goals/objectives/hypothesis tested

Lab 1: Scientific Method. Exercise 1, p. 1. Provide answers within a file. Then send the file back to me.
There are four objectives.
1. Develop the hypothesis underlying experiment 1.
2. Learn the metric system. TASKS 2.1 AND 2.2 = 2 PTS.
3. Calculate percentages and averages of a group of observations. TASK 2.3 AND 2.4 = 4 PTS.
3. Learn how to use Microsoft Excel. TASK 3: 2 GRAPHS = 2 PTS.
4. Learn to do a formal lab write-up. TASK 4 = 2 PTS.
Task 1: Develop the hypothesis.
Introduction: Objectives are to test the hypothesis that arm length and body height are correlated. Do the same for leg length compared to body height. We assume that the human body grows proportionately. A tall person always will have longer arms than a short person.
Task 2-1: Learn the metric system. Find a 12-inch-ruler that simultaneously shows inches (in) and centimeters (cm) and millimeters (mm).

Task 2-2: Following is data table that was generated in the lab using student measurements. You are asked to add one measurement of your own body height, arm and leg lengths. Do as is shown in the Lab Manual in Figs. 1.2 and 1.3.

Task 2-3: Finish column E. Enter the percentages that you calculated using the formula that is provided. The expected average percentage is 40%.

To get the average, sum up all observations and divide by the number of observations.
Example: x1 + x2 + x3 = sum of x; sum of x / 3 = average of 3 observations.
Note: 40 % = 40/100 = 0.4

Task 2-4: Finish column D. Enter the percentages that you calculated using the formula that is provided. The expected average percentage is 40%.
Next: Determine the measured average percentage of leg length as part of body height. Complete column D.

To calculate an average, you do the following:
Add the values for: x1+x2+x3+x4+x5+x6 = total divided by 6
Task 3: Learn how to use Microsoft Excel.
These directions refer to Microsoft Excel 2016:
Inspect the data that was collected in last terms’ API course. Analyze the data, follow instructions on how to enter the data into an excel file and transform the data table into a XY-graph. Follow the instructions below.
1. Open MS Office Excel (Click on the green ‘x’ on white icon). You should see a data table or spread sheet.
2. Enter above data into the spread sheet: columns A and B.
It should look like this:
3. First do the graph for arm length v. body height. Using the mouse and holding the left button, roll over the data in the two columns, then let go of the button on the mouse. This action, dragging the mouse pointer over boxes A1-7 through B1-7, will highlight the data box.
4. Go to the menu above and select “Insert,” then click on the icon directly above the word “chart” as seen below and select scatter

6. Click on the graph . Then simultaneously click ‘CTRL C’. Go to your lab write-up in MS Word. Simultaneously click ‘CTRL V’ to paste the graph into the ‘results’ section.
-Do the same with the other graph and the two tables.
7. Repeat this with the data for body height and leg length. This time highlight cells A12-17 and B12-17.
8. Save as ‘lab1-your name’ and submit.
Task 4: Complete a lab write-up
Introduction (Please write a couple sentences highlighting any pertinent background information. In addition, specific what is the purpose of the experiment.)
Materials/Methods (This will include all the materials used in the experiment and the methods conducted to obtain data in the experiment.)
Results (This should include all the data collected and any figures or tables that need to be included)
Summary (This should highlight the results and draw conclusions based on the measured data.)
Finally: Submit your assignment in the blackboard lab submission tab.
