The Christian Biblical Narrative (CBN) recaps scriptures of the Bible about humans through creation, fall, redemption, and restoration (Grand Canyon University, 2019). Health and disease are not intentions of God. He originally created the world perfect. It was humans, Adam and Eve who defied God and led the rest of mankind into sin, righteousness and shalom. These impressions are what the Christian worldview sees as the foundation of health and disease.
Creation: Everything the eye can see and beyond is all created by God. God created the world perfect for humans to prosper, to live in peace and to enjoy everything he has created for us. Shalom means peace, the kind of peace that comes from a cohesiveness of everything God envisioned (Stetzer, 2012). God made humans in his image. As a Christian, we are all sons and daughters of God. This helps me to keep faithful to my oath to treat everyone with dignity and respect.
Fall: This is the time of significant changes to humanity. The decision of Adam and Eve to defy God’s word led to the end of Shalom on earth and for mankind. The life God envisioned for mankind was destroyed as sin, death, disease, and suffering all afflicted man through the fall. Mankind was no longer given the gift of eternal life on earth but fell to spiritual and physical death. There was a change in the relationship between humans and God. Humans began to assert themselves as enemies of God by our attitudes and actions (Stetzer, 2012).
Redemption: God shows redemption of suffering, sin, and evil by sending his Son, Jesus Christ to earth. Through the life, death, and resurrection of his son, God offers forgiveness to man. The relationship between man and God is mended through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Restoration: The final step of restoration has yet to occur. This is the time when Jesus Christ will return to the world and bring righteousness and peace. The world will be made the way God intended, in Shalom. Sin and evil will no longer exist.
Comfort and hope can be found in the word of God. In the New Living Translation Bible, Peter 5:10 says “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.” Christians must remember to be obedient and trust God’s word in that he will protect us and lead us to a world of no suffering or pain.

Creation: God created all humans in his image and to do good and live harmoniously in a good nature with one another (Hoehner, 2020). This can provide a person who is in the midst of the chaos of sickness with comfort. Knowing that good is surrounding them and supporting them despite their turmoil. This biblical narrative also states that everything is the way it is supposed to be. We are not given more than we can handle and one can take comfort in knowing that despite their turmoil their condition is not done to them in vain, but to better to provide them some higher level of purpose.
Fall: The fall shows a deviation from God’s original plan, it shows us as humans, that nothing is perfect (Hoehner, 2020). This can provide comfort to the ill by reassuring them that even though life has veered off course from their intended path, it is not the end of the world. These curves in life’s path are learning experiences that help to guide us back to the path we truly need to be on once we have been lost, and it’s OK. As discussed in the reading this week some acts of science that appear to go against God’s original plan, such as stem cell research, have actually brought about treatments that aide in suffering (Hoehner, 2020). Even though it was not a Christian intended course, it led to a place that allowed for alleviation of some of human suffering.
Restoration: This is the return to good after the fall. It is not a complete return to a higher place, but it is a return to a better place. After creation (Good) comes the fall (sin) and then restoration or the return to good with some scars to show for the journey. One can find comfort in being able to travel through a difficult time and being able to draw from that experience to lift them up when needed. We all have scars, physical, emotional, etc, that trace our journey along this path and remain with us forever to remind of us of where we have been and how the journey has affected us.
All people have made the journey from being born as morally uncorrupt, to sinning and then being allowed to correct those sins and return to a morally more acceptable place. This journey will look differently for all humans, but is in an essence a circle of life that helps to guide our decision-making when we fall off track. Humans can rest assured that they will always be welcomed back into God’s greater creation by returning themselves to a place of moral and virtue.
